Instagram Announces Edits, the Video Editing App Alternative to CapCut on Smartphones
CapCut, the video editing app developed by ByteDance, is following the fortunes of TikTok in the United States. TikTok has resumed its service after its ban yesterday, but other apps from the Chinese company, including CapCut and Marvel Snap, remain banned in the country.
With the futures of TikTok and CapCut remaining uncertain, Instagram head Adam Mosseri has announced a new free app, “Edits,” that could be an alternative to CapCut on iOS and Android.
In his post on Threads, Mosseri explains that “Edits” is a new video editing app that will allow creators to edit videos from their smartphone with various advanced tools, especially if sharing on Instagram, where it will be possible to get detailed performances of the videos published on the social network Meta, however, Edits allows creators to save drafts and share them with others.

Instagram’s CEO added that the platform’s job is to provide the best tools possible for content creators, regardless of everything that’s going on, likely referring to the TikTok ban in the United States that came into effect yesterday, but on which Donald Trump is stalling.
Mosseri says that the Edits app won’t launch on Android until February, so it’s impossible to say if it’ll arrive in February, but it seems likely.
Instagram isn’t the only TikTok rival taking advantage of the situation in the US. Today, BlueSky and X also introduced new video features to offer US users an alternative to the popular Chinese platform.
